Action Reaction Resistance
Body Brawn Agility Toughness
Mind Invention Acuity Logic
Spirit Influence Insight Resolve

The above is my attempt at coming up with a simple stat/skill/ability system suitable for use in an RPG. It's a 3x3 grid with two axes. It provides a way for a character to influence, react, or resist the game world with their body, mind, and spirit. I wanted something similar to Disco Elysium's skill system, but simpler.

Example Skill Checks

  • Brawn: Lift, move, or destroy objects. Melee attacks. Feats of strength
  • Agility: Manipulate objects, ranged attacks, dodging, acrobatics
  • Toughness: Resist fatigue, substances, damage, and the environment.
  • Invention: Create new ideas, plans, and concepts
  • Acuity: Think fast and recall details, recognize problems and contradictions
  • Logic: Understand systems, assess information, rationality, predict outcomes
  • Influence: Change minds and emotions via lies, persuasion, or insinuation
  • Insight: Understand others' feelings, motivations, and likely reactions
  • Resolve: Overcome adversity, resist social manipulation, willpower

This was basically just a thought experiment, but please let me know if you have any comments or suggestions.

Wow!

That is just brilliant. It's so hard to create a grid because all the parts have to interact, and if one area falls short it's really obvious. You did such a great job with this.

Game mechanics can be really fun to work out. This one looks great.

this is interesting! I've never played Disco Elysium, but the concept of a grid-based system seems like it would work really well in facilitating a range of different playstyles. there's a really nice balance of physical, mental, and interpersonal actions as well - would be lots of fun to explore each option!
